Home-town Golden Shears hope Paerata Abraham made-up for demise by disqualification in the Southland All Nations Championships Speedshear three weeks ago via winning by the same method in the Golden Shears Speedshear Open-class final in Masterton tonight.
Abraham was clearly beaten to the button in the final by Mataura shearer Brett Roberts, who shore his final sheep in 25.549sec, the winner until quality judges a few seconds later ruled the sheep out of the contest.
Easing off after thinking he was gone for all money, finishing in 35.572sec but maintaining the quality to the pleasure of the officials, Abraham was able to claim the first prize of $800 in a competition which started with 23 entries in the closing event of the first day of the three-day 57th Golden Shears.
It was a reversal of form from that in Invercargill when Abraham was first to the button in a final against Te Kuiti shearer Jack Fagan. But on that occasion it was Abraham who eventually went without, after judges ruled he'd left too much wool on the sheep.
While creeping in as seventh of the eight qualifiers from the heats, which were headed by Roberts with a best time 28.538sec, Abraham was top qualifier in the quarterfinal with a time of 27.004sec, and in the semi-final with the night's quickest qualifier, a slick 25.988sec.
The Senior Speedshear attracted 19 entries and was won by Nick Greaves, from Staffordhire, England. Greaves had also been runner-up in the Southland All Nations Speedshear.
